Reading a Korean Payslip: Gross Pay, Deductions and Take-Home Pay
The short answer
Subtract the deductions on your payslip from its gross earnings, then compare the result with deposits for the same pay period. A difference needs explanation; it is not automatically unpaid wages. The calculator reconciles entered amounts and does not determine tax, insurance eligibility or whether a deduction is lawful.
Independent information. No account, credit or transfer outcome is guaranteed.
Start with three figures and one period
Gross pay is the total of the earnings shown for that payment. Total deductions are the listed amounts taken away. Net pay is the difference. The bank statement tells you what actually arrived, so compare it with net pay for the same payment rather than with the gross amount written in your employment contract.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor explains that a wage statement identifies payment details, itemised earnings, calculation methods and deductions. Begin with the payment date and the period covered. A payment made this month may relate to work in the previous month. Matching the period prevents a misleading comparison before you even start adding numbers.
Read earnings and deductions separately
Find base pay, allowances, bonuses and any other earnings lines. Ask which work period and calculation each line relates to. If a total already includes overtime or an allowance, do not add it again when using the calculator. A separate expense reimbursement may also appear in the same bank deposit without being part of the payslip's salary total.
Income tax, local income tax, pension, health insurance or other deductions may appear as separate lines. Do not apply one flat deduction rate to every foreign worker. Nationality, residence and employment circumstances can matter to the relevant rules. Check applicability with payroll and the responsible institution. This tool does not invent tax or insurance rates.
Keep these facts separate
- 지급총액 / Gross pay
- Total earnings already included on the statement.
- 공제총액 / Deductions
- Total listed deductions. Their legality is a separate question.
- 실지급액 / Net pay
- Gross earnings minus total deductions.
- 입금액 / Deposit
- Actual deposits for that salary payment, excluding unrelated reimbursements.
Worked example: a KRW 50,000 difference
Suppose the statement shows KRW 2,800,000 gross pay and KRW 260,000 deductions. The expected net pay is KRW 2,540,000. If deposits for that salary add up to KRW 2,490,000, the amount to reconcile is KRW 50,000. These are fictional figures to explain the arithmetic, not a standard salary, a tax estimate or a real employee's case.
Next check for a separate deposit, an advance already received, an adjustment from another period or a reimbursement mixed into the payment. Ask which item explains the difference instead of treating the calculation as proof of misconduct. If the explanation remains unclear, take the statement and payment records to an official labour-advice channel for case-specific guidance.
Ask what an 'other deduction' actually contains
An aggregated line does not explain accommodation costs, meals, advances or other adjustments individually. Ask for the item name, amount, period and calculation basis. The fact that a deduction is printed on a payslip does not establish that it is lawful. Equally, an unfamiliar label is not enough to determine that every amount is wrong.
Compare the explanation with your contract and the relevant supporting records. Write down the exact part you do not understand. Whether a deduction is permitted, whether a wage floor was met or whether a particular allowance was due requires more than subtracting two totals. The calculator deliberately avoids making those legal decisions.
Reconcile this month's pay
Amounts stay in this browser tab. No names, accounts or financial inputs are stored or sent. This is arithmetic, not a tax assessment or a live quote.
Your evidence checklist
- Work period, payment date and bank deposit date
- Amount and calculation basis of base pay and allowances
- Itemised tax, insurance and other deductions
- Evidence for split payments, advances and earlier adjustments
- Payroll's explanation of any remaining difference
A payslip check is not a bank income assessment
The statement explains how a payment is composed, but a lender may separately check ongoing employment, recognised income and actual deposit history. Do not copy a gross-pay total into an application as if this website had certified that amount. Follow the lender's requested evidence and definitions. A calculator result is not an income certificate.
Our existing document guides explain the differences between employment records, tax certificates and salary deposits. First understand the payment you received. Only proceed to borrowing guides when they are relevant to a real decision. You do not need to take a loan to complete a payslip check or to use this tool.
Make the next payday easier to check
Each payday, match the pay period and date, inspect earnings and deductions, and reconcile the net figure with the relevant deposits. Add split salary deposits together but keep unrelated reimbursements separate. Mark the items that changed from the previous month so you can ask targeted questions rather than re-reading every document from scratch.
Changes in hours, employment start or end dates, allowances and prior-period adjustments can all be questions to investigate. Keep personal records privately. This page does not store your inputs; return with the next statement and enter the new figures. Do not publish your name, employee number, residence number or account details in a public discussion.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use one insurance deduction rate for all foreigners?
No. The relevant nationality, residence and employment rules need checking. This page compares amounts on a statement without deciding insurance or tax applicability.
Does a difference prove unpaid wages?
No. First match the period, split payments, advances and adjustments. Seek official labour guidance for an unresolved case.
What should I ask about an 'other deduction'?
Ask for each item's name, amount, applicable period and calculation basis. An aggregated label does not explain the deduction.
Are my salary figures saved?
No. This tool calculates in the current browser and does not put the inputs in a server request, analytics event, URL or device storage.
Can I use the result as bank income evidence?
No. Ask the bank which evidence it accepts. This arithmetic result is not an income certificate or a lending assessment.
