Loan for Foreigners in Korea: What to Check First
The short answer
A residence card identifies you; it does not establish borrowing eligibility. Start with the purpose of the loan, then match your residence status, documented income and remaining stay to a bank's current product terms.
Information only. Product eligibility, interest, limits and fees require confirmation with the official institution.
Which borrowing route matches the problem?
A credit loan is normally assessed against the borrower and repayment capacity. A jeonse loan also depends on the rental contract, property and the guarantee or insurance arrangement. Student and worker products can have narrower definitions. A product that accepts one group of foreign residents should not be treated as an offer to every visa category.
Write down what the money is for before comparing banks. If it is for a rental deposit, begin with the contract and guarantee guide. If it is for everyday spending, establish which income the bank can recognise and whether the proposed repayments fit your household budget.
What does the bank need to establish?
The practical questions are identity, lawful residence, income continuity and existing commitments. Documents should agree on your name and employment details. A long residence period cannot compensate for an unexplained income record, and a salary account does not by itself mean that a loan is available.
Take both your current residence expiry date and the requested loan end date. Ask whether the bank accepts renewal evidence and what happens if your employment or residence status changes during the term. There is no single remaining-stay threshold that can safely be applied to all banks.
How should I compare an offer?
Compare like with like: the same principal, repayment term and repayment method. Record whether interest is fixed or variable, the reset interval, any early repayment cost, guarantee fee and conditions attached to a preferential rate. A promotional minimum is not an individual quotation.
An initial online estimate is not the final agreement. Keep the dated product description and the bank's explanation of the amount actually payable. Do not borrow solely because a larger limit appears on a comparison page.
What should I do if the first route fails?
Ask which stage failed. A mobile identity check, an ineligible product and a lending decision are different problems. A branch may clarify an app limitation but cannot be assumed to overturn a credit decision. Avoid repeatedly submitting applications before identifying the reason.
A legitimate information guide should not ask you to send identity scans, account credentials or an advance payment to a stranger. If someone claims to represent a lender, verify the institution and representative independently through official channels.
Your document checklist
Use this list to organise questions, not as a universal application requirement. The bank decides which documents and issue dates it accepts.
- Identity & residence
- Passport, the residence document appropriate to your status, expiry date and consistent name records.
- Income & employment
- The employment, salary or business evidence requested by the bank, covering its required period.
- Purpose & existing commitments
- The exact product name, requested term and existing repayments. Add lease evidence for a jeonse route.
- Questions to resolve
- Accepted document dates, application channel, additional fees and any missing eligibility requirement.

What should I prepare before contacting the bank?
Start with your residence and identity documents, the exact product name and evidence of income or employment. For a rental deposit, also check the lease and guarantee route. Ask the bank for the current list and accepted issue dates.
Are the rates or eligibility on this page guaranteed?
No. This is an independent information guide, not a lender or loan broker. Current rates, limits, fees, eligible customers and final decisions must be confirmed with the relevant financial institution.
Does this guide collect my financial documents?
No. We do not accept loan applications, identity scans, account details or income documents. Any bank application takes place through the institution's official channel.
