Student Loan in Korea for Foreigners

The short answer

International students should not assume that a general Korean student-loan programme accepts D-2 residents. Check enrolment, residence category, income or guarantee requirements and the actual lender before planning tuition or living expenses around borrowing.

Information only. Product eligibility, interest, limits and fees require confirmation with the official institution.

Start with the exact type of education cost

Tuition, a housing deposit and monthly living costs are different funding needs. A product designed for one purpose may not cover another. Ask your university's international office about official payment schedules, scholarships or instalment arrangements before using a loan as the default.

An institution's general student page may describe only Korean nationals or a narrower programme. Verify nationality, course type and enrolment conditions. A page using the word student is not sufficient evidence of eligibility.

Which documents explain your situation?

Keep enrolment evidence, the expected programme end date, residence documents and any documented income available. Ask whether scholarship payments, sponsorship or part-time earnings are recognised for the particular product.

Do not assume that permission to work and recognition of income for borrowing are the same question. Only provide truthful records and confirm any work-permission issue through the relevant official channel.

Check dates before accepting a funding gap

Compare the tuition or deposit deadline, your residence expiry, the lender's processing time and repayment start date. An application cannot be relied on as available money until the financial institution confirms it.

If your programme is ending soon, clarify the implications for the loan term and repayments. Avoid paying a non-refundable fee to an intermediary simply because the deadline is close.

Consider the cost after the immediate expense

Record the full repayment schedule and any guarantee or early-repayment charges. A low monthly payment may reflect a longer term rather than a lower total cost. Leave room for essential living expenses.

Discuss a refusal with the lender or university support office before repeating applications. The reason may be a programme restriction or missing documentation rather than a correctable credit issue.

Your document checklist

Questions before your next step

Start with the exact type of education cost

Tuition, a housing deposit and monthly living costs are different funding needs. A product designed for one purpose may not cover another. Ask your university's international office about official payment schedules, scholarships or instalment arrangements before using a loan as the default.

What should I prepare before contacting the bank?

Start with your residence and identity documents, the exact product name and evidence of income or employment. For a rental deposit, also check the lease and guarantee route. Ask the bank for the current list and accepted issue dates.

Are the rates or eligibility on this page guaranteed?

No. This is an independent information guide, not a lender or loan broker. Current rates, limits, fees, eligible customers and final decisions must be confirmed with the relevant financial institution.

Does this guide collect my financial documents?

No. We do not accept loan applications, identity scans, account details or income documents. Any bank application takes place through the institution's official channel.
